Kenya’s new university funding model, which categorizes students into financial bands based on their household income and needs, is a significant step forward. However, to build public trust and ensure transparency, we can draw inspiration from the IEBC’s electronic transmission system used in elections.Learning from the IEBC: A Model of TransparencyThe IEBC’s electronic transmission system uploads scanned images of Form 34A from polling stations to a public portal, allowing anyone to verify and recalculate the results. This transparency has been crucial in building trust and accountability in the electoral process.Applying This Model to University FundingImagine a similar public portal for the university funding model:Data Submission and VerificationStudent Information: Students submit detailed information about their household income, size, geographical location, and any special needs through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal.Verification: This data is verified through various means, including cross-referencing with government databases.Algorithmic AssessmentMTI Algorithm: The Means Testing Instrument (MTI) algorithm processes the verified data to calculate a score that determines the student’s funding band.Public Portal for TransparencyUpload of Assessment Results: The results of the MTI assessment, including the criteria and weightings used, are uploaded to a public portal.Detailed Breakdown: Each student’s assessment result is accompanied by a detailed breakdown showing how their score was calculated.Public Access and RecalculationAccess to Results: Students and their families can access the portal to view their assessment results.Recalculation Tool: An interactive tool allows users to input their data and see a simulated assessment.Feedback and AppealsFeedback Mechanism: The portal includes a feedback mechanism where students can report discrepancies.Appeal Process: If a student believes they have been incorrectly assessed, they can use the portal to submit an appeal.we can achieve several key benefits:Transparency: Making the assessment process transparent allows students and their families to understand how funding decisions are made.Accountability: Public access to the assessment results ensures that the process is open to scrutiny.Trust Building: Transparency and the ability to verify results build trust in the funding system.Error Detection: Public scrutiny helps identify and correct errors.ConclusionImplementing a public portal for the university funding model, similar to the IEBC’s electronic transmission system, can significantly enhance transparency and trust. Boosting Student Engagement During Online LearningIntroduction:There's no doubt that increased teacher-student interaction fuels academic success and engagement. However, educators often face challenges keeping students focused during online lessons, especially in a teacher-paced environment. This lack of focus can significantly hinder online learning effectiveness.As one author aptly stated, "To boost student engagement, teachers should strategize in their lesson design and provide positive learning experiences for their students."This article explores how I employed Formative, a versatile online learning platform, to enhance my student engagement in DEDAN KIMATHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (DeKUT) within a teacher-paced online teaching model.Here's how I do it:1. Setting the Stage: Students log into Google Meet for audio instruction.2. Engaging with Rich Content: Having the class already set-up, I direct them to the Formative platform, where I had uploaded a multimedia-rich presentation that include slides, images, and videos. This variety of content caters to diverse learning styles and keeps students interested.3. Real-Time Control with Teacher Mode: Formative "Teacher Mode" proved invaluable. It allows me to stream the presentation directly to their devices(mobile,laptop,tablet) in real-time while maintaining control of the flow from my laptop. This ensures everyone stays on the same page, minimizing distractions.4. Enhancing Focus with Pop-Up Quizzes: I strategically embed formative quizzes directly within the presentation using Formative assessment features. These surprise quizzes, appearing at random intervals, keep my students actively engaged with the content, encouraging them to stay focused and follow along.5. Meaningful Assessments: Student responses to these pop-up quizzes became part of their coursework, seamlessly integrating assessment into the learning process.

Guest invitations to university classrooms have significantly transformed teaching by bringing real-world expertise and industry perspectives directly to students. This approach bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Guest lecturers, often provide students with insights into current industry trends, practices, and challenges. This exposure not only enhances students' understanding of the subject matter but also helps them see the relevance of their coursework in real-world scenarios.Hellen Mwangi students and mine who are taking System and Analysis and Design unit from DEDAN KIMATHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (DeKUT) had an opportunity to learn from industry professional Mr Oreste Kinaro Keikei a Software Developer on JIRA project management software and how they apply it in the work place.The students were taken through how they can equally use the Atlassian Jira in managing their current System and Analysis group projects interms of: creating project, Adding group members, Creating major tasks and subtasks, assigning tasks to members, tracking project status.The guest lecturer emphasized on the critical role of constant updates by the group members about their roles to ensure progress tracking.We continue to ensure our students in DEDAN KIMATHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (DeKUT) are equally well grounded on the latest industry relevant hands-on experience and knowledge that textbooks alone cannot offer to remain competitive.#BetterLifeThroughTechnology, #DeKUT
