Despite its noble intentions, the new funding model has faced criticism. Some students have reported being placed in bands that do not accurately reflect their financial situation. These errors can occur due to data entry mistakes, inaccuracies in the information provided, or issues within the algorithm itself.Imagine a student from a low-income family being placed in a higher band, thus receiving less financial support than needed. Such errors can have significant impacts on their educational journey.The Solution: Embracing Transparent AITo build trust and ensure fairness, transparency in the MTI process is essential. Here’s how we can achieve it:Algorithm DisclosurePublic Access: Make the full algorithm accessible to the public through official platforms such as the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal. This includes the code, logic, and methodology used in the algorithm.Criteria and Weightings: Clearly outline the specific criteria used to assess financial need, such as household income, household size, geographical location, and special needs. Provide detailed explanations of how each criterion is weighted in the overall assessment.Examples and Case StudiesIllustrative Examples: Provide examples and case studies that demonstrate how the algorithm works in practice. These examples should cover a range of scenarios to show how different factors influence the final assessment.Interactive Tools: Develop interactive tools or calculators that allow students to input their data and see a simulated assessment. This can help them understand how different factors affect their funding band placement.By publishing the MTI algorithm and making the process transparent, we can foster a more equitable and trustworthy university funding system. This step is not just about openness; it’s about empowering students and their families with the knowledge they need to navigate the funding process confidently.Dr. Juliet Moso kindly add your voice being an expert in Responsible AI.     Boosting Student Engagement During Online LearningIntroduction:There's no doubt that increased teacher-student interaction fuels academic success and engagement. However, educators often face challenges keeping students focused during online lessons, especially in a teacher-paced environment. This lack of focus can significantly hinder online learning effectiveness.As one author aptly stated, "To boost student engagement, teachers should strategize in their lesson design and provide positive learning experiences for their students."This article explores how I employed Formative, a versatile online learning platform, to enhance my student engagement in DEDAN KIMATHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (DeKUT) within a teacher-paced online teaching model.Here's how I do it:1. Setting the Stage: Students log into Google Meet for audio instruction.2. Engaging with Rich Content: Having the class already set-up, I direct them to the Formative platform, where I had uploaded a multimedia-rich presentation that include slides, images, and videos. This variety of content caters to diverse learning styles and keeps students interested.3. Real-Time Control with Teacher Mode: Formative "Teacher Mode" proved invaluable. It allows me to stream the presentation directly to their devices(mobile,laptop,tablet) in real-time while maintaining control of the flow from my laptop. This ensures everyone stays on the same page, minimizing distractions.4. Enhancing Focus with Pop-Up Quizzes: I strategically embed formative quizzes directly within the presentation using Formative assessment features. These surprise quizzes, appearing at random intervals, keep my students actively engaged with the content, encouraging them to stay focused and follow along.5. Meaningful Assessments: Student responses to these pop-up quizzes became part of their coursework, seamlessly integrating assessment into the learning process.

    Guest invitations to university classrooms have significantly transformed teaching by bringing real-world expertise and industry perspectives directly to students. This approach bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Guest lecturers, often provide students with insights into current industry trends, practices, and challenges. This exposure not only enhances students' understanding of the subject matter but also helps them see the relevance of their coursework in real-world scenarios.Hellen Mwangi students and mine who are taking System and Analysis and Design unit from DEDAN KIMATHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (DeKUT) had an opportunity to learn from industry professional Mr Oreste Kinaro Keikei a Software Developer on JIRA project management software and how they apply it in the work place.The students were taken through how they can equally use the Atlassian Jira in managing their current System and Analysis group projects interms of: creating project, Adding group members, Creating major tasks and subtasks, assigning tasks to members, tracking project status.The guest lecturer emphasized on the critical role of constant updates by the group members about their roles to ensure progress tracking.We continue to ensure our students in DEDAN KIMATHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (DeKUT) are equally well grounded on the latest industry relevant hands-on experience and knowledge that textbooks alone cannot offer to remain competitive.#BetterLifeThroughTechnology, #DeKUT
