LIBRARY By JEAN "Changing "CHANGING THE GUARD," a movie pantomime with matchboxes and imagination, and one of the seemingly innumerable little art films that are popping out of paintboxes these days, is a product of Poland.

It is a new addition to the 16mm film lending library of the Rochester Public Library. The story, which is nothing at all, tells of a member of the Palace guard who falls in love with a lady of the vicinity. It is such an inflammatory romance, as a matter of WALRATH See for Yourself the Guard" fact, that the palace goes up in flame. But, ah, the debris is so beautifully designed, SO utterly aesthetic, that art lovers will adore the whole idea. It's a witty, brittle film marred somewhat by the fact the natural sounds are too loud and too natural to be contained harmoniously in its dainty, shallow and airy setting.

Because the story concerns toy soldiers is not to say it is a picture for children. It isn't, particularly. The film, only 10 minutes long, is available in the Reynolds Audio Visual Department of the Library. and Chronicle 16D Rochester, Oct. 15, their Deaths ARCHETKO-Saturday, Oct.

Molner Lungs Too Stretched? Try to Breath Out Hard, Too Lung Elasticity Diminishes "Dear Dr.

Molner: My husband has emphysema. It is worse when he gets up in the morning. He coughs and nearly passes out. He went to the doctor five times last month. Is there anything we can do for him at G.M." Let me explain first of all just what emphysema is.

When we are 1 normal, our lungs have some "stretch" to them. We breathe in as the lungs expand. We 24.56 breathe out as the lungs 25.79 contract again. This does not mean that the lungs get smaller. Quite 00 the opposite.

The lungs get 18 larger, and sometimes the 17 patient gradually gets a 14 "barrel chest." 17 If this seems strange to 16 you at first, think of it this 13 way. Take a child's balloon. 10 15 Blow it up and then let the 16 air out again. Do it quite a few times. In time the rubber loses some of its stretch.

It no longer snaps back as SMALL as it used to be. That's true of the lungs, if they lose their elasticity. The lungs can expand just as much, or in fact more. But they don't spring back as SMALL. More used air remains in the lungs.

And therefore there isn't as much empty space into which fresh air can be drawn. It isn't just air that the lungs need; it's FRESH air. Or to put it another way, it is as important to breathe old air OUT as it is to breathe fresh air IN. The cause of emphysema is usually chronic bronchitis or asthma or a strain on the lungs of that order. These problems should be treated early, when they don't seem to be too troublesome.

Treatment then can prevent or delay emphysema later. But after the emphysema has developed, then what can done? Not too much by the doctor, except to try to correct bad conditions and to tell the patient how to help himself. There isn't any way to put elasticity back into lungs that have lost it. What CAN be done is to make things as easy as possible on the lungs, and to get the most use from them. It is not intended to be of a diagnostic nature. Simple home measures but important ones start with giving up smoking. When the problem is to get fresh air into the lungs, it is silly to waste any of the available space on smoke. Restricting needless movement, or activity, of the patient is important, too. The more active we are, the more oxygen we need.

So don't do any physical exertion unless it is necessary. A tight cloth binder around the abdomen may help. It helps squeeze the lungs down to proper size -and the problem, as I explained, is in forcing old air out, so fresh air can come in. Efforts to use the chest muscles as well as the abdominal muscles for breathing can make a noticeably helpful difference. It takes some practice.

And try to breathe OUT hard, as well as IN. These several things I've just mentioned have proved of great help to a lot of patients. They are simple but they are important. "Dear Dr. Molner: I like burnt toast.

I recall that an old remedy for upset stomach is to crumble a piece of burnt toast in a glass of water and drink it. Therefore would eating burnt toast regularly for breakfast be good for one's stomach? My family feels it's a silly J. It won't hurt you if you like it. Small amounts of refined charcoal have been used for some stomach problems. Burnt toast is on the same order.

NOTE TO MRS. J. No, it's not harmful to sleep on the left side. Among other reasons, the ribs protect the heart from undue pressure, and anyway the heart, while slightly on the left side of center, is essentially pretty much in the middle. Are you bothered with ringing in the ears? If so, write to Dr.
